Another extraordinary subterranean settlement in Cappadocia is Kaymakli. Carved into the soft volcanic rock, its maze of passages and chambers stretches across several underground levels.
The tunnels connect rooms that were used for everyday activities, including food storage, cooking and living. Narrow passageways and enormous stone doors reveal how the inhabitants could defend themselves while remaining underground.
Kaymakli and Derinkuyu are often considered highlights of any Cappadocia itinerary, but they offer slightly different experiences. Kaymakli is particularly atmospheric because of its maze-like layout and compact passages.
