Seeing the sheer power of Earth up close has lured people to Iceland’s Fagradalsfjall volcano, which began erupting in March, since travel restrictions eased.

Expert-led hiking tours are taking people to witness the phenomenal spectacle from a safe but close vantage point. For anyone wishing to keep an even safer distance, the Icelandic tourist board has a live feed of the beautiful but ominous sight. Unpredictable and hard to reach, volcanoes are fraught with dangers from toxic gases and, of course, the risk of eruption. The deaths of several people at New Zealand’s White Island, a popular tourist destination, in 2019 brought the dangers of volcano tourism sharply into focus.
