Strictly closed to the public until 2011, Pripyat and other parts of the Chernobyl exclusion zone are now firmly on the hit-list of intrepid urban explorers.

Numerous tour operators typically guide visitors around the deserted remains now that radiation is at a safe level. It’s also recently become possible to visit the epicenter of the disaster, Reactor No 4, but only on highly regulated five-minute tours. Anyone willing to risk it must wear protective gear and undergo radiology tests to measure their exposure afterwards.
