6Day 4: Matera – The City of Caves
On Day 4, drive east to the city of Matera, one of the most unique and ancient cities in the world. Matera is famous for its Sassi districts, where homes, churches, and monasteries have been carved into the soft limestone rock. The Sassi have been inhabited for thousands of years, and today the area is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Explore the narrow streets of Sassi di Matera, visit the Matera Cathedral for stunning views over the old town, and stop by Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario, a recreated cave house that gives insight into how people lived in these cave dwellings centuries ago.
Matera’s otherworldly landscape has been the backdrop for many films, including “The Passion of the Christ.” In the evening, enjoy the city’s local cuisine, which includes orecchiette pasta and fresh cheeses.
