4Mussomeli, Italy

Another Italian town offering homes for $1 is Mussomeli, also located in Sicily. Like Sambuca, Mussomeli has seen its population dwindle as young people migrate to bigger cities. In response, the town’s officials launched a similar program, offering abandoned properties for just €1, with the condition that buyers renovate them within a three-year period.

Mussomeli is a town rich in history and culture, featuring medieval architecture, narrow cobblestone streets, and a nearby Norman castle that dates back to the 14th century. The town offers a slower pace of life, and its warm Mediterranean climate is an additional draw for potential buyers.

While the properties are generally in need of significant renovation, many international buyers have jumped at the chance to restore these historic homes, breathing new life into the town. Mussomeli’s success with the €1 house initiative has made it a popular destination for those seeking affordable property in Italy.
