While Rio is famous for its vibrant beaches like Copacabana, several beaches along Guanabara Bay are plagued by pollution.  

Untreated sewage, industrial waste, and floating debris have turned parts of the bay into environmental hazards. The situation worsened after the bay’s poor condition was highlighted during the 2016 Olympics.
